3. Recent events:

8/21: Clean Up Columbia. Chouteau participated in this city-wide event, in which over 4 tons of trash were collected, demolishing last year's record. Unfortunately, Julie Blubaugh was the ONLY Chouteau member to show up, although she had help from Judi, Loren, and Chandler Davis. Kudos to Julie for her attention to the cause! Thanks Julie!!

4. Notes / News:

Bob Lerch and Joe Hobbs attended a cave mapping workshop offered by the MDC and CRF in Shannon County on August 28-29. Bill Elliott was an instructor at this event.

Jennifer Wolff, Jeff Williams, Orin and Rita Worden, Dan Childers and Daryl Greaser explored four caves in Shannon County on August 28-29. The group enjoyed a moon-lit float on the Current River on Friday night, explored Little Gem, Conglomerate and another unknown (to the author) cave en route to the Round Spring take out. On Sunday the group enjoyed vertical caving in Marvel Cave.

Daryl Greaser and some friends visited Cave Spring Cave in Shannon County during a float trip on August 7th.

Rita Worden has volunteered to become Chouteau's new Trip Coordinator. Rita has been in the grotto for some time and is almost always present on grotto-sponsored trips. She hasn't wasted any time and has already scheduled this month's trip. (See Calendar) You can call Rita at 660-849-2156 if you have any questions/suggestions/info. Thanks Rita!

Patti Williamson will become the new newsletter editor, starting with the October issue. Patti is a relatively new grotto member but is very anxious to start in this position. She has computer experience and plenty of software to keep it looking great. Look for changes as Patti develops her own personal style. Thanks Patti!

The Grotto reunion has been postponed until next year due to time considerations. A committee of five has been set up to organize this event. Rick Walk has a list of 122 former grotto members and the committee will attempt to contact them for this event. If you are a former member of Chouteau or know of a former members whereabouts, please contact Daryl Greaser @ 573-445-8222, or email him at: mocaver@aol.com

Please send all agenda items to Bob Lerch at lerchr@missouri.edu or call him at 573-449-7225.

5. In the Media / Caving News:

A new movie called BATS is apparently going to be opening Friday, October 20. The movie is from Destination Films. The movie synopsis reads as follows: "When the small Texas town of Gallup experiences a series of inexplicable bat attacks on local residents, the government calls upon eminent wildlife zoologist Dr. Sheila Casper (Dina Meyer) to investigate. Although usually a harmless and rather gentle animal, swarms of bats have suddenly become vicious, making Gallup a very dangerous place after the sun goes down. Sheila teams up with town sheriff Emmett Kimsey (Lou Diamond Phillips) to discover why these nocturnal mammals have changed their behavior. As the attacks escalate, Sheila and Kimsey must locate and destroy the swarm's cave before the killing spreads."

More about the movie can be found at http://www.batsthemovie.com/
