Minutes of the Chouteau Grotto

Meeting March 1, 2000

Meeting was called to order at 7:10 p.m..

23 people were in attendance.

Minutes were read  from the previous meeting.

Treasurers report: 1146.51

MSS Director: Nothing to report

Foresight Editor: nothing to report.

Status reports:  Hunters cave has about 1,000 feet mapped, so it is 1/6
completed.  The water crawl still has to be done.  There is no set date
for work this month, but Bob is hoping to get in at least one trip in a
couple of weeks.  He will present some of the water quality research at
a future meeting.

Discussion of meeting format:  We discussed the need to verify quorum.
Bob suggested adding it to the agenda so it would be done at each
meeting.  But as discussion continued, it was determined that quorum
would be checked on presentation of a motion if someone requested such
("call to quorum") .   We are able to carry out any business at
meetings such as scheduling trips, but motions cannot be passed without
quorum.  A quorum is 25% of active members which as it stands currently
is about 10 members.

Web Page: Nathan has been reworking some of the information on the web
and passed around a list of committees and officers for corrections.

Information brochure:  Patti completed the updated brochure changes and
added in some new photos.  A motion was made to purchase a new color
cartridge for Rick's computer at the cost of $35 for printing out
copies of the brochure in color.

Meeting Format: There was also some discussion about protocol on the
resolution passed last month, and it was determined that indeed
everything was in order.  And Bob verified the points made about the
difference between amending the constitution and the by-laws on the
coolist was correct.  We can change by-laws without a 30 day
posting.

Stream Team Work: Anna Dennis will take a group down Bass Creek, on
Sunday 3/5 at 8am, meet at the Three Creeks south lot.

Cave Trips:  Devils Icebox trip, for those that signed up and paid meet
at 8am at the park office, on Saturday 3/18.

Ben Miller will be taking a trip of 4-5 people into northern Arkansas
the 26th of March.

Cave Reports:

Bill Elliot took a group of 10 elementary kids to Lone Hill Onyx Cave
to make an educational conservation video 2/22.

The trip made into Paul-Petroski retrieved the amphopod, which was
turned over to Bill Elliott.  It was still alive and swimming around at
the meeting.  It was identified, and apparently is found in springs
around Missouri.

Rita told of her visit to Anderson caves with Bob, and Grace.

Dan Childers, Kevin, and Jim Huckins found a promising sink hole in
Shannon County, entrance needs some enlargement work.

New Honorary Member:  A motion was made by Mark McGimsey to make Rick
Walk an honorary member.  Rick has served the grotto in a variety of
offices and has done a great deal of work for the organization.  The
vote was unanimous.

Reunion was discussed.  Date set for September 9 and 10.  There was
some discussion about location, Rick is going to contact Al Rutherford
about using his property.  A motion was made and passed to post an ad
in NSS News and Missouri Spelo to find past members.  Advertising cost
allowed $50-100 for the ads.  It was agreed that any mailings should go
out no later than June.

There was no program.

Meeting adjourned at 8:25.

Respectfully submitted,

Patti Williamson
