Minutes of the Chouteau Grotto Meeting
Wednesday, January 3, 2001

The meeting was called to order at 7:20 PM.

20 members and members-to-be attended. New faces were Carol and Charlie Ledgerwood, and Wendy Baker. Wendy has visited Gypsies living in caves in southern Spain.

The Treasurer was not present, but last month's count was $1227.30

Foresight Editors' Report: Daryl and Patti have completed No. 35(1), Winter 99, and it was passed out at the meeting. Congratulations and thanks you two!

MSS Director's Report: The next meeting is January 20, and David Webster will serve as our representative at that meeting. However a longer term replacement is needed until Jo Schaper takes over in the summer. Any takers?

Webmeister situation: Nathan will be leaving us soon. Does anyone out there want to take his place as web master for the Grotto site? It would be good to talk with Nathan about what is involved.

Cave Reports: Bob and Andy Lerch and Ben Miller visited 9 caves and pits in Tennessee, including Xanadu and Zarathustra; they saw a cave-adapted crayfish in the latter. Jeff and Larissa Williams and Wendy Baker visited Meramec State Park's Hamilton Spring Cave, which was pretty trashed out. Orin Worden reported "icemites" -- ice stalagmites -- at nearby Sheep Cave.

Upcoming Trips: There will be a Hunter's Cave restoration trip on 5 January; contact Ben Miller or Rita Worden for information. On January 13 or 14, probably the 14th, there will be a Hunter's Cave mapping trip; contact Bob Lerch for information. Patti Williamson is planning a winter camping trip to Shannon County in late January; contact her for information. Bill Elliott is still planning on a February 10 trip to GPS-locate caves in the Three Creeks area. Bill will send a formal announcement around coollist when the date is firm.

Bill Elliott passed around a two page guide to Missouri Cave Bats -- very useful.

The meeting was adjourned at 8:03 -- the January meetings are usually pretty short.

The program was Mike Walk's Powerpoint presentation of "Strain/Displacement of a Carabiner via Interferometry."
